What happens after I sign up?

After you sign-up, you will be contacted in a few days with important volunteer information. When your assignment is approaching, you will receive another e-mail with final instructions. You will always be contacted via e-mail so make sure that you can receive e-mails from [email protected].

What if my ability to volunteer changes after I sign up?

E-mail [email protected] as soon as you are able to let us know.

Volunteer Opportunity Descriptions

Packet Stuffing

When: Packet stuffing will happen in the month before race-day.

Where: This occurs most often at Run Away Shoes in Appleton. Please see individual event packet pick-up sign-up for complete details.

This opportunity involves tasks such as:

  • Individually packing bags or envelopes with materials for participants such as bibs, pins, and materials from sponsors. This is often done assembly-line style.
  • It also may involve sticking addresses and return addresses on envelopes for virtual participants or those receiving their packet via mail.

COVID-19 Considerations: 

Packet stuffing is done at Run Away Shoes in Appleton. We are abiding by the mask mandate. When there is not a mandate, masks are not required by patrons, but our staff is required to wear them when patrons are visiting the shop. We do suggest that you wear a mask.

Packet Pick-Up

When: Packet pick-up will happen in the week leading up to the event.

Where: This will occur at an outdoor site. Most likely near the event’s start and/or finish line. Please see individual event sign-ups for exact location details.

This opportunity involves tasks such as:

  • Passing off race bib and other participant materials to participants who choose to pick-up their materials on site.
  • Answering basic participants’ questions about the event. Answers to most commonly asked questions will be provided to volunteers.

COVID-19 Considerations:

This will occur at an outdoor site.  A side-less tent will protect volunteers, staff, and participants from inclement weather while providing an open-air experience for COVID-19 precautions.

Course Marshall

When: Race Day

Where: Specific intersections and locations along the course.

This opportunity involves tasks such as:

  • Helping direct participants along the course
  • Having an eye out for traffic or other safety hazards
  • Having an eye out for participant well-being

COVID-19 Considerations:

This is an outdoor opportunity and only needs one person per site. Sites are a very safe distance away from each other. There should be no participant contact unless a participant is in distress and you go to be with the participant until help is on the way. Volunteers can report directly to their site on race day.

Water Stop

When: Race Day

Where: A specific location along the course

This opportunity involves tasks such as:

  • Setting up the water stop tables
  • Setting out the bottled water on the table and replenishing it
  • Having an eye out for participant well-being
  • Taking down the tables and piling the supplies together after the event

COVID-19 Considerations:

This is an outdoor opportunity and needs a group of people, preferably from the same household to mitigate the spread of any unknown COVID-19 cases. The closest a volunteer may be to a participant is only when replacing bottles when the table is running low as participants run by or unless a participant is in distress and you go to be with the participant until help is on the way. Volunteers can report directly to their site on race day.

Finish Line

When: Race Day

Where: At the finish line

This opportunity involves tasks such as:

  • Setting out the finisher medals
  • Setting out bottles of water
  • Instructing participants to keep moving through the finishing area

COVID-19 Considerations:

This is an outdoor opportunity. The closest a volunteer may be to a participant is only when replacing bottles and medals when the table is running low as participants walk by or unless a participant is in distress and you go to be with the participant until help is on the way. However, medical volunteers are on site at the finish line. Volunteers can report directly to their site on race day.

Food Line

When: Race Day

Where: At the finish line

This opportunity involves tasks such as:

  • Monitoring the tent entrance and making sure there are never too many people in the tent at one time
  • Instruction participants to put their bib food line ticket into the bin
  • Monitoring the food table making sure participants are only taking one box
  • Assisting in making sure participants are moving through and not mingling on the race site

COVID-19 Considerations:

This is an outdoor and under and open-side tent opportunity. Volunteers will not come in contact with participants but will be able to do their job 6′ away.
